Industrial Landscapes & Places
The gallery is now expanding to include other aspects of industrial heritage - grand and small. Many of the photos here have little in the way of aesthetic qualities but are of interest because of their content.

Old & New Spans across the North Channel, St, Lawrence River
July 2014, the new low-level bridge is dwarfed by the old span in height & length. Before demolition started, the old bridge was opened to pedestrians for a day.
Overflow Dam, Clowes Lock on the Rideau Canal
The various dams along the waterway were & remain critical components of engineering design. There are 52 dams, of various types & sizes, on the canal
Cultural Landscape, Rideau Canal, Ottawa, Ontario
This section of the canal was a rather stark industrial landscape until the early 20th Century. The canal was bordered bt piles of coal, sheds of all shapes and sizes and a dry dock.
Weir Dam on the old Cornwall Canal.
Another image from the high-level bridge.
The Stone-arch Dam at Jones Falls, Rideau Canal
Completed in 1831, it remains a remarkable engineering achievement to this day. The dam is approximately 350 feet (107 m) long (the length of the arch at the top), 60 feet (18 m) high, and 27 feet (8 m) thick at the base. The base (canyon wall to canyon wall) is 100 feet (30 m) long.
Canadian Coast Guard Vessel, "Martha Black"
Moving west up the St. Lawrence River near Lancaster, Ontario, under the watchful eyes of hundreds of Snow & Canada Geese that line the open channel. The Adirondack Mountains in the background.
The remains of the Domtar Mill Complex, Cornwall, Ontario
A view from the old high-level bridge. The Domtar complex closed in 2008 & most of the site was demolished shortly afterward.
The compressed view through a 400mm lens from the waterfront of Hatley Park
In the immediate foreground looking across the lagoon is the causeway complete with trash barrel; the Panamanian freighter is about a kilometer beyond the causeway in the "Royal Roads" anchorage. In the background the tops of the Olympic Mountains in the state of Washington across the Salish Sea.
The remains of locks on the Old Cornwall Canal
The high-level bridge is barely visible in the background.
A somewhat smaller steel bridge.
This bridge across the Rideau River served a small industrial centre in the village of Andrewsville.
Bear Creek Industrial Site, Yukon Territory
This site is close to Dawson and the gold fields.
Machine Shop, Bear Creek near Dawson
This was all part of the infrastructure to maintain the dredges working the river bottoms in the surrounding area. A broken part could bring operations to a halt and there was no time to wait for replacement parts thousands of kilometers to the south. The machine shop workers either repaired the part or fabricated a new one.
Another morning and another view from the front of Hatley Park
This cruise ship, "The Ovation of the Seas", is bound for the Victoria Harbour.
